Myopia Control for St. Albert Kids

Treat Myopia Now for Better Results Later

Myopia, or nearsightedness, happens when the eye is too long, making distant objects look fuzzy.

This issue can affect people of all ages, but it’s especially important to treat in kids.

As kids get older, their eyes grow longer.

The longer their eyes get, the worse their distance vision gets.

By the time they get to adulthood, distance vision might be bad enough that a super strong prescription will be needed to correct it.

Through a process called myopia control, we can slow down myopia progression, which helps your child hang on to some of the distance vision they have now.

Let’s Slow Things Down

We use myopia control to, you guessed it, control your child’s myopia progression.

Basically, we hit a biological “pause” button on your child’s eye growth.

By changing the way your child’s eyes refract light, we tell their visual system that their eyes are long enough.

The eyes may continue to grow a little bit, but not nearly as much as they would on their own.

This entire process is done without surgery or intrusive treatment.

Limiting your child’s myopia can reduce the potential for more significant eye issues down the line, like retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts.

A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way

Generally, scientists still aren’t totally sure what causes myopia.

But we do have some insight into how you can reduce the risk for your kids.

Start Early

If your kids do have myopia, it’s better to start them on myopia control sooner rather than later.

The sooner you start, the less myopia progresses, the lighter their prescription in adulthood.

Scheduling regular children’s eye exams can help identify the issue as soon as possible.

Skip the Screens

We totally understand that screens make tempting babysitters.

But those screens could do some damage in the long-run.

Some studies suggest that screen time could be linked to a recent spike in childhood myopia.

Send Them Outside

They’re not called the great outdoors for nothing!

Playing outside is awesome for kids’ eyes.

Research indicates that kids who play outside are less likely to develop myopia.

With different light conditions and more variety of distances to focus on, spending time outside is like a trip to the theme park for a child’s eyes.
