Answers to Your Eye Exam Questions

As a general rule, we recommend that everyone schedule an eye exam at least once a year.

Your eye health needs will most likely change as you get older, so your optometrist may recommend more frequent eye exams once you reach a certain age.

Many patients think that eye exams just determine whether you need glasses or whether your prescription has changed.

True, that’s one part of the eye exam process, but there is more to it than that.

The eye is susceptible to a range of diseases. Many of these diseases develop without any obvious symptoms.

By the time patients notice changes to their vision, their eyes have usually suffered permanent and irreversible damage.

Annual eye exams allow us to track subtle eye changes.

By recording changes as they happen, we have a better chance of detecting and treating diseases in their early stages—before they cause permanent vision loss.

Scheduling an eye exam every year is a small step in ensuring your eyes stay healthy and strong.

Alberta Health Care only covers annual eye exams for adults aged 65 and over.

If you have employer health benefits or another type of health insurance, your coverage may include eye exams or a health spending budget that can be applied to eye exams.

What to Expect From Your Eye Exam

Visual Acuity

This is what most people think about when they think about eye exams.

We’ll use a variety of tests to determine how well you can see at various distances.

This may include reading the chart on the wall (also known as a Snellen chart), comparing multiple lenses and determining which one makes your vision better, and other methods.

Ocular Health

This is the part of the exam people often forget about.

Using a range of diagnostic tools, we’ll evaluate the structural health of your eyes.

This part of the exam allows us to consider metrics like eye pressure, visual field, retinal health, and other elements that could show early signs of eye diseases.

We’ll always discuss our findings with you and answer any questions you might have.

Eyewear Styling

After your eye exam, you get to enjoy the fun part!

Our optical team is ready to help if you’re looking for a new pair of glasses.

We’ll discuss your style, your lifestyle, your prescription, and anything else that comes up while we help you find the perfect eyewear.
